Baby blackbird… at last!

Wed 25th April 2012

After much anxiety over the fate of our blackbirds’ nest we spotted this baby blackbird in the garden yesterday, and another glimpse this morning! It is not very pretty, all legs and beak, and is being kept well out of sight in the shrubbery for now, with Mum diving in at regular intervals with a steady supply of provisions…

Lovely as she is, this Mum is not our original Mrs B., who is identifiable by her distinctive ginger bib. The first Mrs B. is still about, and still comes to the patio door for sultanas, but eats them all on the spot – a further clue that she no longer has babies to feed. Hope that we’ll see her gathering nest material for another attempt soon – blackbirds start breeding early enough to have several broods, and the season is young!
