Sparrow and Bluetit share a bath…

Tue 5th June 2012

This little bluetit was just taking his regular bath when a house sparrow turned up and muscled in, on the pretext of needing a drink. What a commoner! Nothing for it but to withdraw until he clears off again…

In fact we rarely see sparrows in the garden – a reminder that they are in serious decline, and have been assigned red conservation status, along with the starling and song thrush.

Such is the level of concern that ‘Save the Sparrow’ was the main focus this year of Bupa’s annual Wildlife Week (7 – 13 May 2012), a program of special activities designed to create wildlife havens in care home grounds and gardens, whilst the RSPB is running a ‘Cockney Sparrow Count‘ project (18-June-12 July 2012) focusing on plummeting sparrow populations in London.
